Megan McArdle’s piece on the 99% has an excellent graph of jobs vs unemployeed. I have two questions

1. Where did these numbers come from? Are they the official unemployment numbers (U-3), or the (probably more accurate) U-5?
2. Why does the “Number of Unemployeed” graph go up so steeply in 2008 to (about) mid 2009?

These are the things I’d like to know
